When do you stop upgrading equipment?

I have a level 20 toxin knife, a level 20 laser kevlar suit, and a level 19 cryo rifle.

Given that it takes ever-increasing amounts of cash and weapons parts to upgrade equipment and given that the NPCs you fight become stronger as you upgrade, is there a point at which you decide it's no longer worth it? Upgrading my cryo rifle to level 20 requires 60,000 cash and 20 weapons parts. Now imagine how expensive it will be for me to upgrade everything to level 21, 22, 23, etc.

Cap, if you werent aware, is +30. So most people stop there lol. Note that those higher lvl npcs give out more cash and the highest lvl npcs (notorious - with a silver star) wont spawn for you until you hit about +26-27 gear lvl. As you lvl higher they spawn more frequently. Notorious mercs and pyros will average 1k cash per kill. Class tokens, if you are interested in obtaining class gear, only drop from strong lvl and higher npcs with greater frequency at higher lvls. It does become very very expensive. The cost from +29 to +30 in it self is 2.5m cash, for modded gear, and some neural nodes (whole) but I forget how many. I believe from lvl 25 to 30 costs a total of 15 neural nodes. The neural nodes of course increase the cost significantly as youll have to make them with creds or purchase them from the bm.

Right now im +29 across with enough cash and nodes to lvl two pieces and about a mill or so from having enough for all three.

Practically speaking once you are not making enough carry cash to lvl regularly you want to start banking your cash and saving. Occassionally youll want to spend some of that cash on getting some more creds. Save up nodes, without breaking them down into node pieces, and just give it some time. Im actually on my second set of gear. I leveled nonswag to 25, when that was cap, then banked enough to lvl my swag up to +25.

Thanks, HumphreyBraggart. I see that it is worth upgrading, but I'll hold off on upgrading my equipment to level 21 and beyond. What's stopping me at the moment is not having enough level 5 fronts. I can still count my level 5 fronts on my fingers. I have done some more exploring in the USA and Australia, and I have found an area with MANY fronts owned by inactive players, has some Apex stations, and has some high value NPC awarms. This area is hundreds of miles from the nearest black market, command post, or major city. Through a combination of the Apex station and evidence planting, I will create dozens of my own level 5 fronts. If I can get 100 level 5 fronts from this, that means I can get $288k.

I got the standard equipment for my class and upgraded them to the point where I'm occasionally getting Powerful enemies to spawn (about the low 20s) and when Powerfuls always spawn when you do the "Storm the Front" missions.

Then I focus on my 1st piece of Class Gear (the armor since it only requires 400 tokens.)

Once I have the Class Armor, I upgrade it as high as possible (it's now at +28).. by doing that, I've gotten more Powerfuls and occasionally Notorious enemies to spawn which drop more tokens.

I hope to get my Class Blade sometime soon as my current blade is only +21 and I have no incentive to dump more upgrades into it if I plan to switch it anyways.

I would suggest that you look into getting a collector drive, and try buying +25 to get you set. +25 goes for an average of 400-500k. This is less than +24-25's upgrade cost. (I assume we're discussing non swag). If you gain intimidator arm mods, and combine them with a collection drive, you'll drastically increase the cash you generate from your fronts.
